Washington Kneeling in Prayer
About
American Village – Montevallo, AL
2019
The president and trustees of the American Village looked to Robert Shure, who they had been working with for years on sculpture projects, to design a new artwork. They were inspired by a painting by Arnold Friberg depicting George Washington praying on one knee and desired a sculpture with the same theme for their campus. The bronze figure of Washington is on a knee, hands clasped in prayer, and his face is raised up to heaven. Beside him rests his tricorn hat. He is depicted during the time he was Major General and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. The statue is placed on the American Village’s Freedom Trail.
